Overall a good article, but personally I'd try to negotiate with those who will offer, accept and negotiate fair deals. I don't want to be the guy who makes low offers and expects to always come out ahead at the expense of cheating others. Except for totally immoral or shifty people, everyone will have needs and is trying to survive, so no need to make it worse for anyone.
I believe in time, that the value of goods will fluctuate and then become common as people set the price, so to speak. Of course bartering can be an exchange of services (labor, skills, training), products (gear, prepared foods, clothing, matches, alcohol, etc.), natural resources (Rock, wood, resin, edibles, etc.) and livestock or food.
Whenever a thing is in short supply (Due to disease, fires, weather, difficulty to collect) that changes values. One might have to be creative and flexible in their deals. For this reason I think it's wise to stockpile a variety of things based on usefulness and to have both inexpensive and high quality items and to produce food, purified water, livestock, or some renewable products.

If you stockpile I.E. Ammo, carry small amounts with you in a collapse of society this can be better than gold and worth more than most items being bartered for. Be prudish but be careful and weary don't' show too much. Just a few rounds can sway a deal. If you can make sure you have someone with you to watch and if needed help you back out.
