What about spears?
I know that their is a risk of losing them but you can always throw it at close range at a large animal like a hippo or elephant and when it almost always hits in that case it can do quite some damage.
My Grandfather used to use spears to hunt fish and large animals (spears are good at killing fish when theirs a large amount)
and he once killed a elephant in one throw.]]></description>

Phil, that is a cool idea, thanks for sharing it.  The technique sounds similar to an atlatl but slightly modified.  I found an instructable for what I think you are talking about here:
